  • Most states require business that are engaged in taxable retail sales to register for a Sales and Use Tax Permit.
  • The Sales and Use Tax Permit allows you to conduct taxable retail sales and collect sales tax from customer on behalf of the state.
  • A resale certificate allows you to purchase goods you intend to resell without paying sales tax to the supplier since you will be collecting the sales tax from the end purchaser (your customer) and remitting it to the state.
  • Most states will accept out of state resale certificates but some states (AL, CA, FL, HI, IL, LA, MD, MA, WA and Washington D.C.) do not, which means you may need to have more than one resale certificate for your business.
